The side-angle camera, which provides a wider view of the test taker’s workspace, capturing hands, the keyboard, and the surrounding area, is often used for high-stakes exams where test takers must show their work or have external resources available.
What is needed:
-
Computer
-
An external camera or webcam device*
-
A testing area in a well-lit location
-
(Suggested) Tripod or gooseneck mount for webcam
-
(Suggested) USB data-enabled extension cable
*Please note that Honorlock is incompatible with these devices:
-
iPads
-
Amcrest Cameras
-
Walmart/Onn Branded Cameras
-
Nexigo Cameras
*Use your smartphone as a webcam:
-
You can use your iPhone as a webcam on the latest version of MacOS, or you can use your Android Phone in Webcam Mode with the latest version of Android, with either MacOS and Windows. Please refer to the guides below for your native option:
-
Tip: If possible, use a wired connection (like USB) instead of Wi-Fi. It’s more reliable and helps avoid issues during the exam. In the absence of a native option, you can also use a secure third-party app, such as Camo or EpocCam to use your smartphone as an external webcam for your computer.
*** Honorlock recommends using a wired webcam and will not be able to troubleshoot every combination of mobile phone, operating system, and application.***
Step 1 - Set Up Your Space
Pick a quiet spot to take your exam.
Make sure:
-
Clear off your desk—less clutter means fewer interruptions.
-
You have room for your computer and any allowed materials.
Step 2 - Determine the camera placement
Put your camera about 3 feet to the side of where you're sitting.
An easy way to measure:
-
Sit at your desk and stretch one arm straight out to the side.
-
Place the camera where your fingertips reach.
This helps make sure your camera can see your hands, keyboard, and screen clearly.
Step 3 - Mount Your Camera
Once you know where to put it, place your camera on something sturdy—like a tripod, gooseneck mount, box, or shelf.
Follow the on-screen steps to make sure your head, hands, keyboard, and screen are in view.
Step 4 - Connect Your Camera
Plug your camera into your computer.
Need more length? Use a USB extension cable.
-
You’ll preview the camera view in the next step.
Step 5 - Adjust the Camera View
Use the on-screen overlay to line up your camera.
Make sure your face, hands, keyboard, screen, and any allowed materials are clearly visible.
Don't worry about making it perfect—just aim to cover all four areas.
Use your computer’s camera preview to double-check.
Switch the overlay based on which side your camera is on.
Step 6 - You're All Set!
