What is needed:

  • Computer

  • An External camera or webcam device*

  • A testing area in a well-lit location

  • (Suggested) Tripod or gooseneck mount for webcam

  • (Suggested) USB extension cable

*Please note that Honorlock is incompatible with these devices:

*Use your smartphone as a webcam:

You can use your iPhone as a webcam on the latest version of MacOS, or you can use your Android Phone on Webcam Mode with the latest version of Android OS on both MacOS and Windows.

You can also use a third-party app such as Camo or EpocCam to use your smartphone as an external webcam for your computer. However, Honorlock does not officially support these types of apps and cannot provide assistance for technical issues that may arise during your exam.

Step 1 - Set up your workspace

Choose a place where you will take your exam. It should be free of distractions and materials that could get you flagged during an exam. Make sure it includes enough space for both your computer and any exam materials you’re allowed to use.

Step 2 - Determine the camera placement

While sitting at your desk, completely extend your arm 90° from the side of your body, with your palm facing out and your fingers pointing up. Your camera should be placed no closer than where the top of your hand is at. This is an easy way to determine an acceptable distance for your camera to capture your exam environment.

  • Alternatively, you can measure out 3 feet directly from a shoulder to determine the correct camera placement.

Step 3 - Set up the camera mount or base

After you’ve determined where you will place the camera, set up the camera on a tripod, gooseneck mount, or sturdy base like a box or a shelf.

Step 4 - Connect the camera

Connect the camera to your computer. In the next step you will want to use your computer’s camera software to preview your camera position.

  • Use a USB extension cable to increase the range of your camera placement.

Step 5 - Position the camera

Position your camera so it clearly captures your workspace. Use your computer’s camera software to ensure your camera is positioned properly.

  • Your screen, keyboard, mouse, and hands should be completely visible within the video capture.

  • Your face should also be visible within the video capture

  • If you are allowed to use a calculator or material during the exam, make sure they are clearly visible in your workspace at all times.

    • clearly visible in your workspace at all times.

Step 6 - You’re ready!

Once you have determined the best position for your camera, you’re ready to take your exam!
