Please note: The Workspace Scan is a new feature currently in beta.
This feature prompts the test taker to use their smartphone to take a single, wide-angle photograph of their entire desk and immediate workspace. This provides a clear, high-resolution image for your review, making it easier to verify the testing environment at a glance.
How to Enable This Feature
To enable the Workspace Scan in your exam settings:
-
Speak with your designated Customer Success Manager to enable this beta feature for your organization.
-
Note that once enabled, this will replace the default Room Scan option for all exams.
-
Navigate to your exam settings within your LMS/integration.
-
Enable "Room Scan" and save your settings. Test takers will now be instructed to use the new feature.
The Test Taker Experience
Understanding the test-taker workflow will help you prepare them for the exam.
-
The Process: During the Honorlock authentication steps, the test taker will be prompted to:
-
Scan a QR code on their computer screen using their smartphone.
-
Follow the instructions on their phone, which will direct them to step back and take a clear photo of their entire workspace. This includes their desk, computer, and any materials within arm's reach.

-
Submit the photo for validation.
-
Webcam Recording: Please note that the webcam is active and records the entire process while they are using their phone. This recording captures the test taker scanning the QR code, moving to take the photo, and being instructed to put their phone away.
-
Validation & Retries: The system automatically checks the photo for common issues (e.g., photo is too close, key elements are not visible). If the photo fails, the test taker will be given a specific reason and asked to try again.
-
Fallback Option: If a test taker indicates they do not have a smartphone, a link will be provided on-screen for them to use the video room scan with their webcam instead.
How to Review the Workspace Photos
The submitted Workspace Scan Photo and webcam recording can be found in the Honorlock Session Viewer.
When reviewing a test taker's exam session, you will find two key components related to this step:
-
The Workspace Photo: The high-resolution image(s) submitted by the test taker.
-
The Session Recording: The standard video recording will show the test taker performing the mobile workflow. You can see them interacting with their phone to complete the scan and then putting it away.
Our system may also scan the photo for potential unauthorized materials based on your exam settings. These items will be flagged for your review, allowing you to make the final determination.
Recommended Syllabus/Exam Instructions
It is recommended to include the following text in your exam instructions to prepare test takers for this step:
"This exam uses Honorlock and requires a Workspace Photo for authentication. You will need a smartphone for this step. You will be asked to scan a QR code and take a single photo of your entire desk and workspace.
If you do not have a smartphone, you can use your webcam as an alternative for a video scan.”
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: How will Honorlock support assist test takers who have difficulty with this step?

A: An on-screen prompt will allow them to select an alternative method. This will guide them to use their webcam to perform a video scan of their room, similar to the previous workflow.
Q: Why is this feature in "Beta"?
A: As a beta feature, we are actively gathering feedback on this new workflow to improve its performance, accuracy, and overall user experience.
